Pre- and Post-Surgery Physiotherapy Success Story

A client attended Physiotherapy for persistent sharp left hip pain that occurred during movement, exercise, walking, and weight-bearing activities. The pain significantly impacted daily function and mobility.

During the initial assessment, range of motion testing revealed severe pain with deep hip flexion. Palpation of the anterior hip crease (femoral triangle) also reproduced symptoms, indicating inflammation and sensitivity within the hip joint region. Clinical findings suggested underlying joint dysfunction requiring further investigation.

A personalized treatment plan was developed to improve hip mobility, reduce pain, and strengthen the muscles surrounding the hip joint. Weekly sessions included:

  • Manual Therapy to reduce pain and inflammation
  • Soft tissue treatment to relieve muscle tension
  • Targeted stretching exercises
  • Hip joint mobilization techniques
  • Progressive exercise therapy to improve strength and function

Following treatment sessions, the client consistently reported temporary improvements in pain and mobility. However, recurring flare-ups continued despite ongoing rehabilitation.

Due to the persistence of symptoms, further consultation and diagnostic imaging were recommended. Imaging results confirmed significant left hip osteoarthritis, demonstrating advanced degenerative changes within the hip joint. The client was subsequently scheduled for a total hip replacement surgery.

The rehabilitation program was adjusted to focus on post-surgical rehabilitation preparation through pre-operative physiotherapy (prehab). Treatment emphasized strengthening the left lower extremity, improving joint stability, and preparing the client for a successful surgical outcome and faster recovery.

Following surgery, the client experienced excellent functional outcomes. Through a combination of osteoarthritis treatment, targeted strengthening, and comprehensive orthopedic rehabilitation, the client regained mobility, returned to normal daily activities, and no longer required ongoing physiotherapy care.

Outcome

  • Improved strength and mobility before surgery
  • Successful total hip replacement recovery
  • Return to normal daily activities
  • Resolution of chronic hip pain
  • No further physiotherapy required
